How Do You Explain Meditation To A Child?

Hello beauties!

Of course, meditation is not just about one focusing on their body and physical state.

When they are practicing meditation, it is mostly internal, emotional, and mental. This is why it's important to explain meditation to a child because they might think you're trying to ignore them when you're practicing meditation yourself.

They might think you’re just sitting them zoning out.

It's also important to properly explain this to them so they can develop a natural curiosity and interest in this very important personal practice. As you probably already know, if you practice meditation, it can definitely bring a lot of benefits to the table.

From extending your patience, helping you become more aware, positioning you for a greater sense of gratitude, and intensifying your focus and will power to the point that you are more productive and alert, meditation’s mental, emotional, and physical benefits is definitely quite long. Indeed, many women claim that meditation helps them sleep longer and better.

If you’d like your kids to benefit from the benefits above, you have to get them to be curious about your meditative practice. One way to do this is to be as conspicuous as possible about your meditation practice.

A lot of busy moms would lock the door and hide away in a corner so they can have a few minutes to themselves and meditate. This way, they can thoroughly relax on so many levels and re-charge their emotional and spiritual batteries, if you will, so they can have more to share with their children.

There’s nothing wrong with that. But, if you want your kids to ask you to explain meditation or better yet, develop an interest in it, you can't hide away. It has to be front and center so they can see what it's about and what are its effects on you.

If you get frazzled easily, the image that they may see can be stark as a black and white picture. They can see mom getting all frazzled because her rope is getting short and there's just so much to do and to worry about.

But then, she practices meditation and it's as if they're talking to a different person. That's the kind of stark contrast you want to create so your kids would be interested. Because, if you think you are struggling with stress, what do you think your kids are going through?

How Do You Explain Meditation Once You’re Asked By Your Child?

Explain to them that it's all about being super aware at a particular moment in time. It's not sleep or zoning out. Instead, it’s as if you have turned a spotlight of your mind's eye on what's in front of you.

You're neither distracted by things you've done in the past and your feelings about them nor are you consumed by worries about things that may not even happen. Instead, say to your kids that when you're meditating, you are just super awake and aware, and in full control which delivers a tremendous amount of peace, relaxation, and calm.

Now, your kids will probably ask, “Okay, that's interesting. But how does that relate to me?” So, when you have to explain in such a way that a lot of their frustration, especially your female children about what other girls say or maybe they’re insecure about something.

Instead of all that kind of eating away at them, tell them that it's like letting go and there's nothing to be, there's nothing to prove, and there's nothing to show up for. You just are and you love and complete.

Believe me, they can relate to that especially if you have teens. With boys, tell them that it's about control because your mind can operate in so many different directions and it seems like everything's going so fast like it's 1000 miles per hour.

But when they focus, they tap into their sense of control over what's going on in the world around them. This can help them study better, perform better in sports, and become a more aware person which can lead to a lot of good things.

Go Beyond The Explanation

When your kids are aged seven or older, they can appreciate the value of meditation. So, when you're trying to explain what you're doing, don't just focus on the lotus position or what you do with your hands. Instead, focus on how they benefit, relax, and do better.

Explain The Meditation And Yoga ABCs To Your Kids

Meditation and yoga go hand in hand. Depending on which yoga clinic you sign up for, it's as if they're joined at the hip. If your kids want to get into yoga or you'd like to introduce them to yoga, you can explain it using a simple ABC pattern that is geared towards the benefits of yoga and the meditation that normally comes with it.

You can say that, A is for awareness, B stands for r breathing, C means the calmness that you achieve, D is the strong defense that your mentality prepares you for when it comes to stress, pressure, and yes, even physical diseases.

While E is a sense of ease when it comes to making a decision or having to make a call. You can go down the list A to Z and just make sure that each letter corresponds to a benefit that your kids can readily appreciate.

The Best Explanation Is Practice

When your kids may have all sorts of questions, a lot of these will go away once they learn how to practice meditation and mindfulness with you. This is why you must keep repeating mindfulness exercises and involve your kids.

You can't use a one on one time big time kind of mindset. If you know that your kid has a very short attention span, you can't just sit them down and practice mindfulness with them one time and expect it to work miracles. It doesn't work that way, instead, you have to be consistent. It has to be a commitment on both of your parts.
